You’ll hate me for saying it, but I love mondays. Mondays are like the New Year, every week. Today was especially new year-sy, because yesterday I spent six hours alone in the car, driving to Portland and back. Plenty of time to think and listen to Markéta Irglová murmur on the radio…to stop any place I fancied and just enjoy my camera again. I discovered the western slopes of Mt Hood are a virtual fairyland; all moss and mist and drippy ponderosa pines. On my way back to Bend, the full moon shape shifted Mt Hood into a silver shadow and cut sharp evergreen shadows against the snow pack. As I drove further south through Warm Springs Indian Reservation, Mt Jefferson rose up, the evening star drifting just off his shoulder. Feeling all optimistic, I decided then and there I would stand on the summit one day. If you’re gonna set goals, might as well get crazy about it!

It’s late, but because I’m feeling guilty for my last post (so sad! so depressing!) here are those hiking photos I promised. Over Christmas-time, we rambled the trails to Benham Falls and along the Deschutes River out of Meadow Camp. I can’t get enough of the Deschutes…every time I’m near it, I just wanna launch a kayak. Only thing holding me back is how chilly it’d be to get dumped this time of year!

My footsteps sounded alien, echoing strangely in the empty rooms as I walked through our house one last time. The straggler boxes were packed; nothing left but late afternoon sunlight streaming in across the floor. The sorrow of leaving crushed my heart into a weighty nucleus; around it spun, tighter and tighter, the faces of my family. I wondered what really made a house a home…and hoped that whenever we made it to where we were going, I would find it again.

Sunrise, Moving Day

We celebrated christmas early with my family, and set out on the Oregon Trail Monday morning. I’ll never forget how my dad waited to leave for work, and traveled the first twenty miles with us down I-75; a real, proper farewell. I sobbed pretty much the whole way.

Dane was the lucky guy tasked with wrastlin’ our overloaded trailer through eight states. My job was to follow in the subaru with the pups, and keep an eye on the wheels. I guess if they started smoking or flying off I was supposed to call him and let him know?

Made it! Bend’s skyline – Mt. Bachelor, Broken Top, the Three Sisters & us. (I think that’s their names; they all look the same to me.) I promise my next post will not be so melancholy…I’m missing my family tonight! Coming up soon: new hikes, new jobs, new friends and a new place to live!
